Semantic Web

I found this very confusing. Can't get my head around the concept.

Voyage RSS

I have looked at Voyage RSS feed reader. I didn't like the 3D effect of the headlines.
I will not be using it.

KartOO

I have done a few searches in KartOO. I found it quite good as it leads to other sites. I still prefer Google though.

VuFind

I have looked at VuFind and think that the National Library of Australia use of it is good. It was easy to use and friendly.

Linkedin

I have looked at LinkedIn & joined the site. I think it is more for professional people who want to get ahead in the library world. I don't think I will be using it at all.

23 THINGS - FINALLY FINISHED!!!

I have FINISHED 23 things. Thank goodness it's over. I can now do my usual work & not face as many challenges as I faced with the program. I found it frustrating at times as I needed quite a bit of help to do things as I am not very computer literate. However at least now I know about things like Facebook, MySpace, RSS feeds and Second Life. These are all things that I have heard about on the news or read about in the newspaper. At least now I know what they are, although I can't see any use for them in my work. I may use Google Maps as I found it useful for going to new places.

Second Life

I don't get it!! Why 'create' a second life when your own life is difficult enough at times! It's a bit scary to think that some people are 'obsessed' with their Second Life. I suppose that if you can't get what you want in your own life, in Second Life' you can. (ie a house, husband/wife, kids etc). I was a bit surprised that you have to pay for everything too [just like real life]. Why bother??

I think that there are ways that the library could use 'Second Life' but it would take a computer geek to do it! Maybe a map of the bookshelves with virtual students looking for the dewey numbers on the shelves & a look of surprise when they find what they are looking for!

Podcasts

Today I listened to some podcasts, including 'coffee break spanish' and Radio National.
I subscribed to RRR and to a couple of their podcasts. The first one I subscribed to is 'plonk' and then I thought I had also better subscribe to 'healthtrip' in case I have overindulged and need a hangover remedy! Once again I needed help with this task. Thanks to Mish & Andrea for their help.

YouTube - still trying to catch up!

I have searched & looked at some YouTube videos about libraries & librarians. Some of them were funny. I also had a bit of look at other subjects on YouTube and found some on dogs which were okay. However I found it a bit frustrating with the slowness of some of the videos that I looked at. Is there a way to speed up the film??

Library 2.0

I have tried to understand Library 2.0 but I have had some difficulty doing this. I have made several attempts to read the site and have looked at other peoples' blogs but I still don't get it. I have decided to move along with other things on the '23 things' program as time is running out.

Photo on Wiki

Today I put a photo of the 'dog next door' to me on the wiki. I had help from both Tony & Andrea as I found it a difficult thing to do.

Del.icio.us

I have looked at del.icio.us on the web & for recipes & dogs. One dog site was for cute photos of puppies.
I think this site would be useful for personal use but I can't see any benefits for my work.

iGoogle

I looked at iGoogle and liked it. I think it would be useful in your personal life as you could add the bookmarks of your favorite sites for quicker access to the information that you want. I added the weather & world times to my site.

Google Book Search

I have just looked at Google Book Search & I think that it is a useful tool. I searched for the suggested title 'Google: the missing manual' so that I could see what the result found & how it was set out. I also checked a couple of other titles for comparison & found that some titles had no preview information available. I am currently reading the attached image of a Bill Bryson book.

Google Docs

I have had a look at Google Docs and I can see that it could be useful but I don't think I will be using it for work purposes.

Google Maps

I liked Google Maps. I looked up where I live now & could see my abode & also what my neighbours have in their backyards - quite a few with swimming pools. I also went to world maps in Google & looked up the street I was born in in England.
I also looked up some of my friends and families address's and got directions from Google Maps as to how to get there. I liked the fact that they gave the distance and time taken to get there. I checked 2 ways to get to an address in Frankston (one on the highway & one not), and the way I go is the quickest but it is also the longest way. I think I'll stick with the highway unless there are hold ups with the traffic. I will use Google Maps again as it is a very useful tool.

MySpace

It's a new year & I have decided to try to catch up with '23 things'. I have looked at MySpace & I'm not impressed with it. It seems to be a bit like a dating site! However I did like the music blogs but I can't see myself using MySpace in the future.
